The World Bank was created in 1944 to make money available for rebuilding
countries devastated by the second world war. For the next 35 years, the focus of
the bank was on infrastructure, but in 1979 it created the Health and Nutrition
fund to provide funds for global health.
Over the intervening years, the Health, Nutrition, and Population sector funding
has grown considerably to the latest figure of £32bn over the last five years.
